Questions about customs clearance
Do I need a customs broker to import into Mexico?
Yes, for commercial shipments. A licensed Mexican customs broker files the pedimento. We coordinate clearance on both sides of the border from Laredo.
What is the padrón de importadores and how do I register?
It is the SAT registry every importer in Mexico must join. Registration is online and requires an active RFC, a valid e.firma and a positive tax compliance opinion.
What is the encargo conferido?
It is the authorization you grant on the SAT portal so a customs broker can clear goods in your name. Without it, the broker cannot act for you.
What is a pedimento?
It is the official import or export declaration filed with Mexican customs. It declares the goods, their value and their classification, and it is how duties and taxes are paid.
What documents do I need to import or export?
Usually a commercial invoice, packing list, BOL and product data sheet. When applicable, also a USMCA certificate of origin and any permits the goods require. We tell you exactly what your product and operation need.
How do I know what duties my goods will pay?
It depends on the tariff classification, the value and the origin of the goods. We review the classification before crossing so there are no surprises.
What happens if I get a red light at Mexican customs?
Customs performs an inspection to confirm the goods match the declaration. If the paperwork is in order, the shipment continues after the review.
Does my product need to meet a Mexican NOM standard?
Many products must meet labeling or safety standards to enter Mexico. We provide guidance and assess your product's NOM compliance before it crosses.
What do I need to import food into the United States?
The importer needs an import bond and a DUNS number. The manufacturing plant must have an FDA Food Facility Registration. The goods must be labeled according to FDA rules. You also need to share in detail how the goods are packed: cases, cans or jars, how many units each holds, and the volume or weight, so they can be declared to the FDA efficiently.
What is an in-bond cancellation?
An in-bond shipment moves through the US under a customs bond without paying US duties yet. When it leaves the country, for example crossing into Mexico at Laredo, the in-bond has to be closed with US customs. That closing is known as an in-bond cancellation, and we handle it in Laredo.
